Updates on Calendars, Fees and Free and Reduced Lunch

GCMS Families,

We wanted to take this opportunity to communicate with you some information for the 2020-2021 school year in an effort to allow ample time for everyone to plan for both costs and calendars.

First, we want to share a document that will explain our school year calendar which shares start and end dates, quarters, holidays, and days that we have either abbreviated schedules or no student attendance.   This calendar is created according to state requirements trying to best respect the educational process and all those that are impacted.  You will notice that we have incorporated breaks throughout the year, both holiday and additional, in order to recognize both the values of educational time and family time.  We hope by incorporating extended breaks at Thanksgiving, winter break, spring break, and some extended weekends families will plan accordingly and ensure attendance on student attendance days.

The second document is our 2020-2021 Fee structure which includes some significant changes.  First, we are no longer charging participation fees for athletics, band, or extra-curricular organizations.  Although these programs are values added to our district we have determined that those fees should be eliminated so that anyone who is a part of the GCMS community can gain access without added cost.  Additionally, we have eliminated the added course fees for selective courses across the district including dual credit, woods classes, and agriculture classes.  It is important to note that Drivers Education fees do remain.

The only increase that has occurred is in our initial registration fees.  Although the fees are seeing a significant increase the elimination of other fees will largely offset the increase and reoccurring need to pay individual fees throughout the year.  The determination was made to simplify our fee processes for all stakeholders.  When compared to the other schools in the HOIC (our high school conference) we will be significantly lower than most when all fees and costs are considered.

The final document is the application for free and reduced lunches which also qualifies students for fee waivers should the family qualify according to the standards provided.  If you are directly certified through the State for free or reduced lunch benefits you automatically qualify for the fee waiver.

The information for both calendars and fees is being shared with you so you can prepare for registration and the start of school.   If you have any questions or concerns you are welcome to send them to me via email at darnell.jeremy@gcmsk12.org, or call the Unit Office at 217-784-8296.

Your support and cooperation are appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mr. Darnell
