MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYERS!- be sure to check your basketball Google Classroom today for an important message from the coaches!

Families,
I want to be transparent and honest as we continue to navigate the challenges of the 2020-2021 school year. Yesterday, in typical Friday fashion we, educators, were thrown another curve without warning that is both great news and incredibly challenging. We, GCMS, will take on those challenges trying to maximize opportunities for the children we serve.
The challenges include managing the expectations of the governing bodies which include IHSA, IESA, HOIC conference, Twin County conference, IDPH, and FCPH. These organization pass down universal rules / recommendations and we have to figure out what we can do and how we can manage those demands with our facilities, offerings, and staff.
What sports will be played and when is not as simple as getting a season start and end date and moving forward. First, students-athletes could participate in multiple activities that either run simultaneously or have overlap creating both individual choice and potential team challenges for numbers. Second, we have to be able to provide safe appropriate facilities to engage. In a typical year our activities are spread out and gym or field space is a challenge. Compressing all activities into a narrow timeline could limit how often or what we can offer. We are fortunate to have dedicated coaches that often coach multiple sports, but they cannot be in two places at once when seasons overlap or run simultaneous. Officials will be in high demand, and have been scarce for years. Our athletic directors have a great group of officials but booking will be hard because of demand. Finally, transportation is required and we have a great crew, but limited numbers of buses and drivers for extra routes and events.
I share these challenges with you to garner understanding for whatever decisions we make in the coming days. We ALL want our kids to be provided opportunities to do the things they love and we will do all we can to make that happen. Like all things in 2020-2021 what we decide will not be the same as the district down the road because our circumstance is different. We look forward to managing this unique circumstance and preparing for a fresh start to 2021-2022 this summer!
If you have questions, concerns, frustrations, or celebrations please share those in a constructive and productive way and we can work together to serve our children.
Darnell.jeremy@gcmsk12.org
Thank you for supporting GCMS!
Sincerely,
Mr. Darnell

Stay Tuned!!!
In 7 days we went from Tier 3 to Phase 4 and IDPH changed the sports regulations in Phase 4 without warning. The GREAT news is we can provide opportunities for kids to engage with extra curricular activities! Please be patient as we navigate what that will look like for GCMS. IHSA (high school) will be making some season decisions this coming Wednesday and IESA (middle school) has provided guidance that we will consider. There are many logistical challenges we will tackle and plans will be shared once we have more clarity.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Mr. Darnell

We are also working on planning for extra curricular activities to begin within allowable parameters on Monday.
Thank you for your attention and support!

Families,
I am sorry to inform you that GCMS will be moving our Middle School and High School to full remote learning starting Friday, January 15 through Friday, January 22 and returning to in person learning on Monday, January 25th. GCMS Elementary School will continue in person learning.
Students are being informed this afternoon in order to be prepared at home for remote instructional days on January 15, 19, 21, 22. You will receive reminders of the remote learning schedules from your child's respective schools.
These closures are happening due a combination of circumstance including shortages of staff and significant numbers of quarantined students. By closing these two buildings for this duration of time we are creating 10 days of separation while only losing 4 days of in person instruction for our oldest students, while still serving our youngest students in a safe manner.
It is imperative that students engage during their remote learning opportunities to ensure a continuation of learning. It is equally as imperative that we use this time to limit health risks so that we can return on January 25th.
We will continue to make decisions based on current circumstance and inform you as quickly as we can knowing that these decisions challenge everyone involved. Thank you for your continued patience and attention.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Darnell
Superintendent

The IESA gave some clarification on mitigation measures for sports moving forward. Please view the link to see what they have stated.
https://www.iesa.org/news/2020-2021/COVID_1-7-21.asp

Tomorrow (Jan. 5) was supposed to be the day we were to begin basketball tryouts/practice but all of that is going to be put on hold for now. IESA has announced that we have to remain in the same situation we were in before break, with no practices or activities. So, for the time being, we won't be able to get started. Therefore, there will not be any basketball activities after school tomorrow or until we get permission to start. We are looking for ways to offer workouts on a voluntary basis, but those would need to be approved by public health. Even with that approval, the best we can hope for in the near future is perhaps something to begin after Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 18). I know this is disappointing news, but as we've always tried to do, we need to stay positive and keep our hopes up that we'll be able to have a competitive season. I'm confident that at some point we'll be able to do something, we just don't know what that will be. We're kind of in limbo until IESA gives the OK to proceed. In the meantime, start checking our classroom for drills and ideas to keep you in basketball shape, physically and mentally. Please let me know if you have any questions and keep your heads up- we'll get through this.

Greeting GCMS,
December 30th, and I am confident that we are all looking forward to the calendar turning to 2021.
This is a reminder that GCMS Schools will be returning to in person learning on Tuesday, January 5th. We will be following the same schedule as first semester to start 2021. Please remember that buildings open at 8:00 am and classes start at 8:20.
Please remember to self certify each day, and error on the side of caution if you or your children have had any exposure to Covid. The most challenging thing we faced in first semester was managing quarantines, and we can all do our parts to minimize that risk.
Finally, please stay actively engaged when absences occur, it is essential for students do complete assigned curriculum and seek out help when challenges occur.
We will be hosting a Facebook live update on January 4th with information and opportunity to ask questions.
Stay safe and healthy!
Sincerely,
Mr. Darnell

Families,
I wanted to share with you our most recent COVID-19 data, a change to reporting, and a change to our quarantine requirements. Please take a couple of minutes to read this letter so you are aware and informed.
GCMS has had 5 positive cases of COVID-19 in the last week, of those cases only one case was present at school or required close contact tracing. The one case that required close contact tracing occurred at the elementary school and all affected parties have been notified.
As a practice moving forward I will give updates and notifications on Wednesdays to minimize the communications but still allow for consistent and transparent communication of our school COVID-19 impacts. Please note that anyone affected by positive case contact will be notified individually as soon as possible.
The CDC and IDPH have recently changed the quarantine requirement from 14 days for close contact down to 10 days, assuming no symptoms. GCMS will adjust to that practice immediately. Our nursing and office staff have been communicating return dates when quarantines are required and will continue to do so, but the duration will be shorter. Those who are currently on quarantine will receive new return dates if you haven't already. Also, if an individual is contacted by public health and given either longer or shorter timelines we will default to their expectations should families present written confirmation.
Thank you for your continued support and vigilance as we navigate this challenging school year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Darnell

Families,
All three buildings are in the middle of a "coin drive" to raise money for Gibson Area Food Pantry. In a time that has presented so many challenges this is an amazing opportunity to teach our children the true meaning of giving, encourage a little friendly competition, and support the Gibson Area Food pantry that just last week served nearly 200 household and 500 people in our community!
The GCMS community always steps up to provide for those in need and this is an amazing opportunity to ensure that this community resource is well stocked to serve during the upcoming winter months! The food pantry has developed great supply chains and resources that stretch the dollars you donate to maximize the impact they have. A dime or a dollar will help. Checks written to Gibson Area Food Pantry are wonderful as well.
Many people have reached out to me in recent months asking what can they do to help and here is your chance! Make that donation, talk to your children about the spirit of giving, community, and the pride in supporting your neighbors in a time of need!
Thank you in advance and I have no doubt GCMS will amaze us as always.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Darnell

Families,
I wanted to take a few minutes and offer some insight into the challenging decision we are currently facing as it pertains to winter sports and specifically basketball.
The Illinois Department of Public Health issued a change to its guidance, specifically for the sport of basketball making it high risk. When IDPH made this decision the Governor announced that no games can be played ,and also made adjustments to other sports including wrestling (moved to summer). In response to this decision IHSA took the position to defy the Governors order and allow individual school districts to decide if they would maintain the winter season and play basketball (important to note no other sports were reconsidered or designated by IHSA). The next day the Illinois State Board of Education issued a statement supporting IDPH and the Governor's announcement and stating that districts in defiance run the risk of liability and penalty.
These actions prompted our first communication that we would be making a final determination for basketball, specifically, this week. GCMS also took the stance to continue with our scheduled open gyms, practices, intramural, and activities to address the known need of normalcy for our students and community (where allowable).
Dating back to July the coaches, athletic directors, and administration have actively been creating stages of participation that we will provide opportunity depending on the mandates / controls that we are faced with. The best case is competition, the next is full practice, and the most restrictive is virtual supports. We do not take these decisions lightly, nor do we seek a path of least resistance, but rather have to consider the health, legal, and reciprocal effects that these decisions have.
Recently, a letter has surfaced that was sent to the Governor on behalf of nearly 200 of the 859 school districts in the State. GCMS is NOT signed on that letter but let me be clear that does NOT mean we do not support the ideas and promotions for due diligence by all entities when making decisions that affect our kids, schools, and communities.
I have been in contact and consultation with the HOIC conference schools, our legal representation, and our liability insurance providers ensuring that whatever decision is made will protect the heath and interests of all of GCMS students, families, and tax payers.
The State of Illinois has taken strong positions on measures as they pertain to the COVID-19 pandemic, often times dictating, or greatly limiting, our actions as public entities.
A final decision will be made in coming days, and regardless of what that decision is we will continue to try and find ways to maximize the education and experiences for our students.
As always I can be reached at 217-784-8296 if you have any questions, or email at darnell.jeremy@gcmsk12.org.
Sincerely,
Mr. Darnell

Good morning,
We have decided that we are going to do a trial run through of our full remote schedule this coming Wednesday. All students will be required to log in to their 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 9th period classes on Wednesday, November 11. THIS DOES NOT MEAN WE ARE GOING FULL REMOTE!!!
The times are provided in the Google Document (link provided) for each class period. All students will be provided links to the Google Meets for each class, including their study halls if they have one.
We feel this is necessary to make sure that students understand how to log in and access all of the Google Meet and Classroom options provided by the teachers from home.
Teachers will be discussing the process and expectations on Monday and Tuesday to ensure that all students understand and have the opportunity to ask questions for clarification.
Thank you,
Mr. Bielfeldt

Teachers at GCMS High School are spending the day hard at work turning all of their instructional plans into lessons which can be delivered remotely!
For example, if I am a Geometry teacher I left school last week prepared to teach the next lesson in my curricular sequence on Monday on the topic of Rotations as part of a Transformation unit. My lesson plan included manipulatives and measurement tools necessary for calculating rotation. At 5:00 last night, I found out that lesson would never be taught because instead I would be delivering instruction digitally. Today, I am using this prep time to find a virtual tool and resources which can be used to teach the same math standard, within the same scope/sequence of my curriculum.
If I am the teacher of an Industrial Tech class that was supposed to start repairing lawn mowers Monday then today I am looking for ways in which to teach small engine repairs remotely that will still allow students to apply the skills on their own.
The building is currently full of examples of teachers working hard to ensure our two-week transition to remote is as curricularly seamless as possible. Thank you GCMS High School teachers for making it happen!

GCMS Families, if you missed the all call from Mr. Darnell this evening, the script of his call is available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ywulwqoZp4uSaoxgDwqo9SlwFY9bV8Mtgc04YQsrtjI/edit?usp=sharing

Reminder About Remote Wednesdays
Wednesday is a school day and there are curricular expectations that students need to complete prior to returning to school on Thursday.
If a student has a question or needs clarification on an assignment, the student needs to email his/her teacher(s).
To the best of your circumstance, students should have a workspace that is free of distractions, such as cellphones, to complete assignments.
We appreciate all of our parents’ support of their students during Remote Wednesdays. This is a partnership between the school and our parents that is helping all of our students achieve academic success.
Mr. Bielfeldt

Reminder that middle school report cards are going out today. Students will be bringing them home after school. We also sent home our FastBridge scores as well so be on the look out for those as well.
Mr. Bielfeldt

Ask your middle school student to share what they are learning in their classes, but be specific. "What did you work on in science class today?" or "What book are you discussing in English?" Start the conversation and have it daily!

And just like that the rules changed. Face coverings DO NOT have to be worn by fans if social distancing is practiced. Sorry, the rules we have to follow are constantly evolving. This is a good change. Stay safe and enjoy your kids contests.
-Mr. Darnell

Families,
According to both IESA and IHSA fan expectations, as supported by IDPH, ALL fans must maintain social distancing and wear a face covering, unless eating or drinking. In addition GCMS administration has asked that only immediate family (guardians and siblings) attend contests to ensure we are in compliance. Failure to comply with these expectations could lead to elimination of fans or cancellation of games.
Our students athletes are answering the call so that they can compete, practice, and improve. Please respect those efforts and lead by example. We realize the frustration these expectations create, but we need to adhere to them to maintain opportunities for our kids.
Your cooperation and support are appreciated.
-Mr. Darnell

Three fun facts about our new Social Worker, Mrs. Shelly Curry: 1.) She enjoys playing board games2.) Her favorite book is "The Glass Castle" 3.) She loves to shop!
But, perhaps, the most interesting thing about Mrs. Curry is that she actually grew up in Gibson City and attended school here until her family moved to Minnesota in her freshman year of high school.
Her favorite thing about her job is "connecting with students and families while assisting them to be successful". Please help us welcome Mrs. Curry back to the Falcon Family!

We #FalconProud to share that GCMS alum and former teacher Michelle Schultz has been chosen for the St Louis Bombshells, the professional dance troupe associated with the St Louis Ambush, an indoor professional soccer team. Ms Schultz was a member of the dance team while in high school; we’re always excited to see “our kids” continue to pursue their passion! Congratulations Michelle!

Please help us welcome Dr. Amber Hays to the Falcon Family!
Dr. Hays will be serving as the school psychologist for the whole GCMS school district. This year will be her 11th year as a school psychologist; it's a job that she always wanted to do--she even shadowed a school psychologist in high school! Some of her hobbies include musical theater, cooking, taking care of her cats, and reading. Her all-time favorite childhood book is “Where the Red Fern Grows” but she also loves the Harry Potter series and has even been sorted into Slytherin house! Dr. Hays’ favorite thing to teach is using puppets to teach preschool children about emotions and friendships. When asked what she is looking forward to about GCMS, Dr. Hays reported “I am so very excited to work with students with disabilities from preschool all the way through high school! I can’t wait to start getting to know students and their families!!!”
Sounds like you will fit right in here at GCMS, Dr. Hays! Welcome to the Falcon Family team! #IChoseGCMS

We are #FalconProud to welcome back another hometown graduate to our teaching staff this fall!
Mr. Jeremiah Benison was born and raised in Gibson City and graduated in the class of 2001. His wife, Melissa, is also a graduate of GCMS and they have one son, Brady. This fall, Mr. Benison will be teaching the Computers “special” at GCMS Elementary School. His favorite video games are Fortnite and Magic Arena. Right now he is reading “Dwarves” by Markus Heitz--some of his other favorite epic fantasy novels include the “Sword of Truth” Series by Terry Goodkind, “Lord of the Rings” by JRR Tolkein, and the “Inheritance” cycle by Christopher Paolini.
When asked about what other details he thinks families would be interested in Mr. Benison stated “I am the local Cubmaster in Rantoul in addition to being a self described geek, I love to be outside camping and hiking. I love all sports but especially football. My favorite team is the New England Patriots. We have two guinea pigs named Kylo and Chewy just like the star wars characters which me and my son are big fans of!”
We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Benison back into the Falcon community! #IChoseGCMS

Please help us welcome our new 8th grade science teacher, Ms. Carly Jurik, to the Falcon Family!
Ms. Jurik is from Heyworth and this will be her first year teaching. In her free time she enjoys hiking, reading, crafting, and traveling (she has a personal goal of visiting all 50 states!). When asked about why she chose GCMS, Ms. Jurik said: "Growing up in the HOIC, I saw that GCMS was always a team that had a bunch of community support. I can’t wait to be apart of that. I’m also looking forward to coaching volleyball as well and, of course, meeting my students."

We are so excited to introduce you to Ms. Chelsea Augsburger!
Ms. Augsburger will be teaching 3rd grade at GCMS Elementary this year. She is from El Paso, IL and is the youngest of three. "Those Shoes" is her favorite children's book of all time but she enjoys reading mysteries in her free time. This summer she has spent her time golfing, taking walks, and enjoying the outdoors as much as possible.
Ms. Augsbuger is just as excited to be teaching in our small-town community as we are to have her! Please give her a Falcon-proud welcome!

Every year, the 8th graders participate in the 8th grade Olympics. The kids dress up in team colors, have team chants, and battle for the coveted 8th grade olympics trophy. Because of remote learning, this year's 8th grade class were going to miss out on this anticipated event. So, the 8th grade teachers came up with a way for the 8th graders to do 8th grade olympics- quarantine style! Take a look at what the students came up with in this year's Quarantine Olympics! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnsSeC3bBFW2p75Kk56qNcXUFTMsKpuDC
